Helpful Tips for staying organized with Piano materials

Piano Materials on a piano bench, these are various piano learning and piano sheet music books.

I adore playing the piano, what I sometimes don’t love is how many different items and materials can quickly build up with playing and practicing piano! That’s why I find it so helpful in my home to utilize organizational methods for keeping my piano materials in order and easy to find!

When you first start playing the piano it’s easy to begin acquiring sheet music, and this keeps going with each new song you want to learn. Before you know it, you are needing to spend time before you play the piano sifting through piles of sheet music to find the one song you’d like to play. That isn’t a great way to spend your piano playing time and is likely creating some stress for you as well.

Time & Rhythm Keeping Items

You may utilize a stopwatch or timer to keep track of your practice and playing time. As well you may also use a metronome for rhythm. Depending on the type of piano you’re playing on an upright piano, keyboard, grand piano, etc you may want to keep this on or near the piano as its long-term place. If your piano has a place for items this may be a great space to keep them out of the way, but easily accessible for when you are playing the piano.

If your piano doesn’t include a part of the piano with a ledge or area where items can live, then I would recommend a little bin that you can store the items in. It’s a simple organization idea but can really help you easily find the items when stored together and in a bin to keep them safe and at less risk of getting broken or damaged.

Piano Sheet Music Organizer

Piano sheet music is one of the most common materials used for piano that quickly gets messy, disorganized, and scattered. There are a number of ways to organize your piano music to help with reducing wasted time sorting through piles and piles of papers! This is common when you’ve been playing an instrument for some time and have built up quite a collection.

You can purchase a file folder that divides into numerous sections, this will allow you to sort and organize the sheets easily. Most are made to hold 100-300 sheets of paper so this can be of great help are your collection builds. If you have a large number of piano sheet music documents you can also look into a more expansive filing system. This can help keep piano materials nicely sorted and organized with plenty of room to grow as your collection builds and grows.

An alternative option is you can also go digital with your piano music! You can keep your piano music saved on a tablet that you can use to read your music off and this will keep your clutter down.

Miscellaneous Materials

You might have items such as stickers, tape, playing schedules and reward charts…etc. Various items that can be utilized to help children learn to play piano and keep them engaged. It’s easy for these items to build up and get lost, damaged, or just get in the way when not playing the piano. Like time and rhythm keepers you can buy a bin, or a shelf/cart if you’d like multiple zones to keep these items organized and out of the way. Keeping these items all together and in a dedicated space helps them be found quickly, easily and keep them ready for use!

Organizing piano materials might not be everyone’s favourite task, I get that! However, taking the time to build in some simple organization methods for commonly used items will help save time, money, and your sanity! You can either purchase multiple bins to keep each piano item in, or purchase a shelf or cart that can sit beside the piano as a main space to house all your piano materials!
