Welcome! Here at PianoCommuters, we love to meet interested piano students who are looking for piano lessons for beginners or have spent years playing the piano. When you sign up for lessons with us, a piano teacher will meet with you to understand where your current piano skill is. It’s okay if this is your first piano lesson, we’re excited to have you start your first step to learning piano with us!

You might now be asking yourself – what is included in this free consultation first piano lesson? Well, we’re glad you asked! We will review and gather what experience you are bringing to the lessons. Let us know if this is one of your first piano lessons, and for kids as well!

meet the student and parents or guardians

The first step in your free consultation is fairly simple, one of our piano teachers will arrive at your house. We here at PianoCommuters love to meet families that we’re going to teach piano to. When we arrive, we take some time to get to know the student, understand some basic piano lesson comfort, and what the needs are of the student. If the student knows any songs on the piano this is a time where they can play the piano and show us their skills. If this is the first step to learning piano no worries, we will sit and discuss what type of teaching needs the student has as they learn piano for the first time.

During this 20–30-minute meeting, we will be reviewing basics with the student, we also encourage during this time that families or others around can ask any questions. We love to speak about teaching piano as well as our own passion to play.

Due to Covid-19 virtual classes and consultations are available online. Simply request when contacting us that you would like online piano lessons and we will speak with you about our availability with those requests at that time.

go through what they’ve learned before (if the student is not new to lessons)

If the student is experienced with playing the piano, then we will go through what they know and what they’ve played before. This can involve reviewing sheet music, years of playing, and what types of lessons and books they’ve received from previous lessons. At this time, we can decide if the student (and guardians) would like to take a similar approach to teaching piano, or if they would like to take a different approach to piano lessons.

We love to work with students and families to ensure we are providing the services to help the student best learn. When the student has their first lessons, whether, with us or another piano teacher, we want to ensure we pick up where they’re at with the new student. We will provide customized lesson plan(s) to help the student grow as they play piano.

discuss expectations: type of lessons, RCM exams, ETC.

During the consultation, we will discuss different options for lessons. You can decide if you would like your child to participate in Royal Conservatory exams if you would like them to have theory homework, and the type of songs you would like them to play. For younger students, we make sure to include games and activities to keep them engaged. We can also work on composing music as part of the lesson if that is something your child is interested in.

This is also a great time to inquire if you have any questions or concerns about piano lessons for yourself or your child. We’re eager to speak to our music teaching skills, love for pianos and, how we can help the student learn piano!

So, what are you waiting for? We’re so excited to meet and teach those wanting to learn piano. It’s okay if you’re a beginner, or your child has never had lessons! We welcome all skill levels and types of piano players and are eager and excited to get started with helping you improve your piano skills. Want to know more – check out our FAQ page!
