Christmas Piano Music

Why learn Christmas music on the piano?

This might be a question you’re asking yourself or asking on behalf of your student. Holiday music or Christmas music is wonderful to learn as this helps set the mood during the holiday season. You and your family likely have holiday-themed music as December approaches, think about how beautiful it would sound coming from your child or yourself from a piano in your house!

As well, learning to play beautiful Christmas music on the piano keeps up the engagement in lessons and practice for kids! Annually we have our Christmas recital that students can take part in, this helps them prepare for this. Lastly, learning Christmas music is fun and is a great skill to have that can be shared with family and friends over the holiday season. You can even pair piano Christmas music with guitar Christmas music if someone you know also knows similar songs!

Christmas songs to learn this holiday season

Okay, so now that we’ve chatted about why you should consider learning holiday/ Christmas piano music this holiday season. Let’s dive into songs that you can learn! If you’re unsure if you or your child has the skills and experience to play a particular Christmas song, simply speak to your piano teacher about what you’d like to learn, and they can outline if this is a good match for where your skills are at.

Christmas piano music is lovely to listen to, and I don’t know if I can pick one favourite song. I adore the classics; however, each piano Christmas song helps get me in the holiday mood.

Christmas Music

Silent Night – Let’s start things off with silent night. This song is fantastic as it can be very easy for beginners to learn chords, and it can also have more advanced versions for more experienced players. Silent night is a lovely piece to play at night, or during the holiday time. It’s a classic song and can be played in your home easily once learned.

Have yourself a merry little Christmas – this is another easy piano Christmas song that can be learned with most skill levels. You can easily google the Christmas sheet music for this song if you’d like to give it a try at home on your own. This is one of those songs that always puts me in a merry mood and has such a lovely melody to it.

O Holy Night – this is a nice and slow-paced song that is great for those with beginner and intermediate skills. O Holy night is a religious-focused Christmas song as beautiful angels sing throughout the song. Given this song's slower pace it doesn’t appeal to all children to learn, some connect with this song more than others.

Jingle Bells – this is likely one your child or student has requested! It’s a very popular Christmas song and has a nice upbeat pace that is exciting to play on the piano. You can easily find this song on youtube or you can google the piano music to learn how to play this. As we mentioned above speak to your piano teacher if this song is of interest to the student!

Deck the Halls – this Christmas carol is another one of those easy Christmas songs on piano. This song has quite a bit of repetition in it which helps with practicing this song. Deck the halls is one of those songs that always helps put me in the holiday mood!

Which of all the songs we listed above helps put you in the Christmas/ holiday spirit?
